This tapestry is also known as The Tree of Life and is from an embroidered wool portiere designed by John Henry Dearle (1860-1932), an associate of William Morris who worked very closely with him for many years. This piece was produced around 1910 by the firm of Morris & Company, the firm originally established by William Morris at Merton Abbey, Surrey. The art of weaving tapestries had almost died out in England until it was revived by Morris.  With the aid of an eighteenth century French manual on Arts & Crafts, Morris wove his first experimental piece at Kelmscott Manor in 1879.  Thereafter he taught his workmen the technique, and the production was later moved to Merton Abbey, where Morris & Company produced many beautifully designed curtains, rugs, tapestries and wall-papers. This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.

Composition: 70% cotton, 20% viscose, 10% polyester

Finish on reverse: This tapestry is fully backed with luxury cotton lining incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging purposes.
